Pat McGrath is doing skincare now

TextAlex Peters

You’ve already seen the product on the dewy skin of Naomi Campbell, Lila Moss, Kristen McMenamy, and every runway model Pat got her hands on last season

When Dame Pat McGrath is around you can be sure it will never be a famine of beauty, honey. The legendary make-up artist has been behind the best beauty looks of the last 30 years – from all your favourite fantastical, theatrical Galliano looks right up to muse and #1 hustler Julia Fox’s signature eyeliner. So it’s no wonder that when she launched her beauty brand Pat McGrath Labs in 2015 it became an instant success. When the range finally launched at Selfridges in the UK in 2019, one product was sold every 40 seconds.

But it turns out that it’s not just make-up that McGrath is mother of. Throughout her career, she has been cocktailing her own skincare products on her models, layering creams with rose water to create the dewy skin she is known for – and now, she has finally bottled her secrets and is making them available to us.

The very first Pat McGrath Labs skincare product is here and it’s a milky essence called Divine Skin Rose 001. As the name suggests, the product is made up of antioxidant-rich rose water created with Rose Biotic, a proprietary ingredient that harnesses the power of the Damascena rose. This has been combined with HydraSphere 18, an emulsion enriched with botanically-derived oils and ceramides, together they work to calm, rebalance and fortify the skin barrier while deeply hydrating.

Formulated by a Korean lab, McGrath has been testing the product on her models for over a year and revealed on a Zoom call that she’s been secretly debuting it on shoots and runways including on Lila Moss for her Vogue cover and Kristen McMenamy when she walked Valentino’s Haute Couture show in March. Naomi Campbell, a long-time friend of McGrath’s and the face of the brand, has been using it for months and is a huge fan: she shared on Zoom that she has already gone through 15 bottles of the essence, which she had to keep in plastic water bottles so as not to let the cat out of the bag.

“It just makes everything glowy and plump, which is important for me because I’m on set all the time, and I’m in front of lights, and I’m on planes, and my skin dries out and it gets really dehydrated no matter how much water I drink,” Campbell told Vogue, saying she now wouldn’t use anything else. “My test is really travelling, though — how often do I need to reapply something on the plane so my skin feels hydrated. I usually sleep straight through flights and with this, I’d wake up and still have the shine.”

Divine Skin Rose 001 launches on on 29 April.
