Tracee Ellis Ross’ The Hair Tales will be a love letter to Black hair

Oprah Winfrey and Michaela Angela Davis are also on board the upcoming docuseries which will explore the beauty and identity of Black women through their hair

Tracee Ellis Ross is continuing her mission to celebrate and uplift Black hair with a new docuseries about Black women, beauty, and identity through the lens of Black hair. Alongside Michaela Angela Davis, Ross will executive produce and narrate the series, titled The Hair Tales, which will lead the audience through a journey connecting the personal tales of Black women to broader societal and historic themes, and explore the complex culture of Black hair.

“Hair is a portal into the souls of Black women, it drives straight to the center of who we are,” Ross said in a statement. “Our goal is to share this vibrant community, where we hold a sacred space for each other. Like many women, I can trace my own journey to self-acceptance through my hair. This series is personal and universal, American and global. It is a love letter to Black women.”

Hulu and the Oprah Winfrey Network have teamed up to broadcast the series, with Winfrey also serving as an executive producer. Production will begin later this year for a 2022 premiere. “There is a story in every curl, coil, and kink of our hair. This show will be a dynamic adventure through these stories of ancestry and innovation, politics and pop culture, ritual, resilience, and revolution but mostly reveal humanity. It will affirm Black women, inform others and inspire everyone,” said Davis.

In 2019 Ross launched her haircare brand Pattern, designed specifically for the needs of curly, coily, and tight textured hair which have often been ignored by the industry in the past. “During high school, I was very aware of the fact my natural hair was a societal standard I was pushing up against,” she told Dazed Beauty last year. “Pattern is not just some sort of personal beauty journey, it’s an actual political journey of allowing a space to be ourselves.”
