An honest Zara make-up review: the good, the bad, and the confusing

TextAlex Peters

Creamy lipsticks, patchy eyeshadow, interesting packaging, and great prices – we bring you the hits and misses of Zara’s new beauty collection

Are you even really a fashion label anymore if you don’t have a beauty range? With heritage lines like Chanel and Dior, more recent launches from Hermes and Valentino, and just-announced upcoming products from the likes of La Perla, at this point make-up seems to be almost mandatory. Even Supreme brought out a lipstick last year in collaboration with Pat McGrath.

That’s not to say the products can’t be good. Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation has long been a staple of beauty lovers everywhere and you can pry Gucci’s Louisa Red lipstick out of my cold, dead hands. But the market is crowded and brands have to work hard to prove their products are legitimate and not just a cynical money-grabbing afterthought.

Zara is the latest fashion brand hoping to add its name to the list of successful beauty spin-offs. Last month, it launched an affordable range of refillable make-up spanning lipsticks, eyeshadows, bronzers, blush, highlighters, and brushes. To create the products, the brand brought veteran make-up artist Diane Kendal on board, while Fabien Baron designed the chic, minimalist packaging.

But is it any good? I tried out some of the key products to find out. Here is everything you need to know about the range including the hits, the misses, and the things that don’t make sense to me.
