Billie Eilish went platinum blonde because of a fan

TextAlex Peters

The singer was recently convinced to make the drastic change from green and black to bright blonde

Earlier this year, Billie Eilish signalled the beginning of a new era of her career when she swapped her trademark slime green roots and jet black ends for a platinum blonde bombshell look. Now, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the singer revealed that she was convinced to make the change by her fans.

“I’ve been wanting it blonde for a while and then I saw a fan edit when I had green hair,” she shared. “It was me with whatever hair colour I had, and they just edited blonde hair on me and I was like, ‘Ah, it’s so sick, I want it!’” Eilish thought the colour was an unlikely dream, however, because her hair was in such bad condition following years of bleaching and dying. “I thought I would burn it all off if I tried, but I did it!”

Asked by DeGeneres how long the transition from black and green to blonde took, during which time Eilish wore a wig, she says it took roughly six weeks. “It was a lot, we started in January, I think January 16 was the first day,” she says. “Then it was like two weeks of nothing, healing, letting my hair take it in, digest, and recover. Then again, and two more weeks. And then again. Oh my God, it took a long time.”

Eilish also discussed her forthcoming album, Happier Than Ever, telling DeGeneres, “Everything is new, it’s a whole new era. I’m so excited, I can’t tell you. It’s the most proud I’ve ever been of anything I’ve created and I really can’t wait for the world to hear it.” There were sadly no questions about working with Archie, the very large anaconda that starred in the video for her latest single “Your Power” – a missed opportunity in our opinion.

There were also no questions around Eilish’s recent cover for British Vogue which saw her star in a pin-up-inspired shoot that marked a huge departure from the singer’s signature aesthetic. Discussing the new, more provocative look with Vogue, Eilish emphasised that showing off her body did not make her less of a role model. “Don‘t make me not a role model because you‘re turned on by me. Showing your body and showing your skin – or not – should not take any respect away from you,” she says.

“It‘s all about what makes you feel good. If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, fuck it – if you feel like you look good, you look good.”
