Euphoria’s beauty looks are the most inspiring on TV, of course

TextAlex Peters

New research into TV shows inspiring British beauty trends places Euphoria in the top spot, alongside The Queen’s Gambit and Riverdale

In news that will surprise no one, Euphoria has been found to be the most influential television show on British make-up trends. Anyone who’s been on Instagram in the last year and a half, had a vague awareness of the SS20 fashion season, or just has eyes, will have known that already but it’s nice to make things official.

In research carried out by gender-free make-up brand Jecca Blac, social media trends data was analysed to discover the TV shows that have most influenced beauty. Euphoria looks were found to be the most searched for and recreated on social media (Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok), while the hashtag #EuphoriaMakeup had the most views (516.7 million) on TikTok. Three of the eyeshadow looks seen on the series featured in the top 10 most influential make-up looks list.

“We thought it would be interesting and fun to look at which TV looks were inspiring make-up wearers the most,” says Jessica Blackler, Jecca Blac founder. “Unsurprisingly Euphoria featured heavily – the make-up artists on the set of that show did an incredible job of creating iconic and creative looks that have undoubtedly inspired the public to glam up their face with bold colour and jewels.”

Topping the list of influential looks was Maddy’s rhinestone eye look, while Rue’s glitter tears and Jules’ colourful eyeshadow also made the top ten, ranked at three and seven respectively. In second place was the “natural glow” of Bridgerton character Daphne, while the 60s cat eyeliner in The Queen’s Gambit and Cheryl Blossom’s red lip in Riverdale rounded out the top five. When Euphoria debuted in 2019, it was a cultural reset for beauty, marking the end of the full face Instagram aesthetic and bringing in a messier, more playful, more experimental attitude towards make-up. During the bleak political and environmental climates of 2019, the colourful, over-the-top make-up was a much needed tonic and its influence was immediately felt across the board from Instagram to the heavyweights at fashion week where rhinestone eyes and graphic liner were in full effect. Although make-up artists like Pat McGrath had been doing these kinds of looks for decades, Euphoria gave people permission to try it out for themselves – to take them off the runway and into the streets.

As we wait for the much-anticipated second season, revisit our helpful guide to recreating the best Euphoria looks below.
