Stop what you are doing: Billie Eilish is blonde now

Sayonara slime green roots, we’ll miss you

The end of an era has finally come. Billie Eilish has done away with her iconic slime green roots and debuted a new platinum blonde bombshell do.

When Eilish revealed her new green roots all the way back in 2019, in many ways, it marked the beginning of her stratospheric rise to the top. Her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? had been released a few months earlier and her single “Bad Guy” was a worldwide hit. The hair, a standout look so different to the staid and stagnant styles we were used to seeing, felt like a jolt of electricity. It was as fresh and innovative as the star herself and became synonymous with her – an integral part of her instantly recognisable signature look.

The look stayed with Eilish over the next two years. After rapid periods of experimentation where the star swapped silver for blue, blue for lavender in quick succession, she stuck the green out, the colour growing down her hair as her roots did. Brief departures from the style, such as the mousey, middle-of-the-road brown wig for the video of single “xanny”, caused panic among fans, but Eilish always returned her the limey roots.

But now, it seems the change is here for good. Back in December, Eilish confided in her fans that as soon as her current musical era was over – a period that she signposted with the release of her documentary The World’s A Little Blurry – she would switch things up once again. “I’m gonna give you a new era,” she promised. “I have announcements to make, I've got some shit to put out.”

Well the documentary was released last month and Eilish stuck to her word. The singer today debuted her bleach blonde look on Instagram with a video and image of the new cut and colour. Her hair, now dyed a platinum blonde, has been cut into a voluminous shaggy layered style with a long, curtained fringe. “Did you guess correctly?” and “Pinch me” were the captions accompanying the looks. Fans were, of course, excited about the change, with heart-eyed emojis and exclamation marks abound. Comparisons to Marilyn Monroe have already been thrown around.

From what Eilish has said in the past, this new hair is very likely a sign of exciting musical announcements to come. Given that, a few weeks ago, she shared the news that she had recorded an album in lockdown, the outlook seems positive. So even as we mourn the slime green roots, we welcome a new era of Billie Eilish.
