Say goodbye to Billie Eilish’s slime green roots

TextAlex Peters

The singer joked she might not release her forthcoming album if fans don’t stop making fun of her hair

When Billie Eilish debuted slime green roots last year it marked the beginning of an era for the young singer. While Eilish had always been experimental with her hair, swapping silver for blue, blue for lavender, lavender for black, these green roots were something different.

At a time when it seemed like every hair colour and style had been done and done another time, Eilish’s inverted dip-dye was a refreshing splash of newness in a staid and stagnant pond. It was as fresh and innovative as the star herself and became synonymous with her – an integral part of her instantly recognisable signature look. So much so that when she wore a mousey, middle-of-the-road brown wig for the video of single “xanny”, it was almost radical in its dullness.

Over the last year and a half, the green has crept down Eilish’s hair as her roots grew in and it became almost a marker of time passing. But, now the time has come to say so long, farewell to the iconic neon lime. Last night, Eilish confided to her followers on Instagram that time is running out for the hair style as an era comes to an end and also asked for patience from a few fans.

“Fuck you guys. Stop making fun of me, my god!” she joked. “I’m fucking making you an album. I will not put it out if you keep making fun of my hair. Shut up!”

Eilish promised that she will be changing her hair as soon as her forthcoming documentary The World’s A Little Blurry is released in February and that the occasion will mark the end of an era. “I’m gonna give you a new era,” she says. “I have announcements to make, I've got some shit to put out. Anyway let me live with my fucking hair that I’ve had for way too long, OK, shut the fuck up.”
