Celebrating the nuanced beauty of Black creatives from all over the world

For Black people, Black History Month isn’t just a month, it’s all year round. However, Black History Month is a great opportunity to educate ourselves – read more here on Black-owned beauty and fashion brands to support.

It’s also a time to celebrate Black joy and creativity. So, look no further than these incredible Black creators on TikTok – across make-up, hair, and more. “We are so blessed to have talented Black creatives on social media that are inspiring, motivating, and just mind-blowing with their content,” says Nigerian make-up artist Damilola Adejonwo. Joined by seven other Black creatives from all over the world, the group highlights the powerful nuance of Black beauty – Black beauty isn’t one thing and it never will be!

Here, we speak to the each of the creatives about Black beauty and who else they want to spotlight.

TAMMI CLARKE, @MAKEUPBYTAMMI

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Tammi Clarke: I create make-up tutorials to help inspire people to be more creative with their looks and to have fun stepping out of the box with make-up. I do this to show that make-up is not just using products to enhance your natural beauty, it can also be a creative outlet to express yourself.

What does beauty mean to you?

Tammi Clarke: Beauty to me is someone with a warm spirit, someone that has the ability to make others feel comfortable and happy in their presence. There is a true beauty in a kind soul... along with a colourful eyeshadow look!

What is the future of beauty?

Tammi Clarke: The future of beauty is individuality. Being yourself and owning who you are is the future, I hope the days of fitting in and going with the crowd are over and people can be free to express themselves however they want through make-up, clothes, etc. without fear of judgment.

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Tammi Clarke: @the_brooksbrother@glambymykaila, and @dominiqueallisonx.

LINDIWE DIM, @LINDIWE

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Lindiwe Dim: I’m an actress, model, and beauty content creator. I create stories and art projects in the form of beauty editorials on myself. Using a range of inspiration, from a modern day interpretation of Scar from The Lion King to a beauty editorial inspired by the struggle for love between Black men and women.

I also started a challenge during lockdown called #30DaysOfEditorials where I recreated magazine editorials I loved. It started as an outlet for my creativity and frustrations after moving to a new country, being alone and not being able to work or create with others during the lockdown. It quickly became so much more.

Young creatives In South Africa joined the hashtag and started seeing themselves as not only able and worthy of being in those spaces (magazine covers/editorials) but also more than capable of creating those spaces and projects for themselves and each other. It was so inspiring and encouraging to experience that kind of support for my creativity in a time that I felt so alone. So, I do this because it makes me happy and because I can see that when I share my ideas it encourages others to dream up worlds and express theirs as well.

@lindiwedim

Being from The bottom of Africa sometimes made me feel I’d never make it. Gotta see myself where I want to be. How’d I do? ##30daysofeditorials ##makeup

What does beauty mean to you?

Lindiwe Dim: Beauty to me means a canvas, it’s an opportunity to embody one of the many different types of women I have in me. It’s subtle some days and blatant other days. It’s art, literally that first definition of the word ‘art’ when you Google it. That’s what beauty means to me.

What is the future of beauty?

Lindiwe Dim: The future of beauty is fearless, I think it’s daring and it’s going to be as creative and weird as we want it to be. Our generation and the generations coming aren’t subtle or muted in their creativity anymore. Things that were considered absurd 15 years ago are commonplace and barely turn heads now. (i.e. Dennis Rodman and his hair colours) So I really think the future of beauty is even more creative freedom.

DAMILOLA ADEJONWO, @SENORFENTY

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Damilola Adejonwo: I’m a content creator with a focus on beauty and make-up. I love doing make-up because it makes me feel confident and it’s a huge passion of mine.

What does beauty mean to you ?

Damilola Adejonwo: To me, beauty means being able to be yourself, not caring what anyone has to say. Beauty is also being unique and different as beauty is in the eye of the beholder and everyone sees beauty in their own way.

What is the future of beauty ?

Damilola Adejonwo: The future of beauty is progressive and bright. Despite the pandemic that has affected the beauty industry this year, I still see there being a big opportunity for beauty to gravitate to more people. Men are now being involved in taking care of themselves with male grooming and women are also falling in love with make-up more every single day, it looks like beauty will become a huge essential soon.

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Damilola Adejonwo: We are so blessed to have talented black creatives on social media that are inspiring, motivating, and just mind-blowing with their content. For example, @estare and @theplasticboy are so amazing with their content. I also go to @ropoDemure and @kingkiahh’s page for inspiration with make-up. @thugBabyImani@leahmck_99, @sashainspires, @way_of_yaw, @bexcxmpbell, and @makeupbytammi are accounts I normally look at for inspiration for my TikTok videos and these are Black creatives I would love to spotlight.

WIAM, @WIAMXA

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Wiam: I make natural hair videos on TikTok to try and inspire young Black girls to learn to love their hair and embrace themselves and their natural hair, as I didn’t really have that growing up. I also give advice to young girls on how they can look after their hair properly.

What does beauty mean to you ?

Wiam: To me, beauty means loving yourself inside and out no matter your flaws. Beauty is not just about looks and finding people attractive, it’s also about being a kind-hearted person and having a beautiful soul. I believe everyone is beautiful in their own way and we should all accept our differences and celebrate them.

What is the future of beauty ?

Wiam: The future of beauty is inclusivity, for people to be able to look at social media and see themselves represented. For people to celebrate each other.

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Wiam: One Black creative I would like to spotlight is @gelikanu on TikTok.

SHAVONTÉ DILL, @SHAVONTE_DILL

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Shavonté Dill: I’m a beauty creator on TikTok and Instagram. I've always had a love for all things creative, it first started with performing arts and has now ventured into hair and beauty. Art will always be important to me, it provides joy and escape, I feel like a new being every time.

What does beauty mean to you ?

Shavonté Dill: Beauty is a mindset, how you view yourself and others, ugly doesn't exist. Beauty is being comfortable in your own skin. Beauty is learning to love yourself on the good and the bad days. Beauty is treating others with respect and kindness.

What is the future of beauty ?

Shavonté Dill: I believe the future of beauty is genderless, raceless and is inclusive of LGBTQ+ without restriction. Beauty is for everyone, no matter what race, size, gender, or sexuality. There's still some work to do, but I believe we will get there.

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Shavonté Dill: I’m a big fan of @naezrahlooks, @iamkaylabeauty, and @brimonetxo – they are all on TikTok as well! I also enjoy @_ehiz, @syeraplitt, and @isaiahxavier10 and a few others!

ZAINAB HASSAN, @ZAINABHASSAN410

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Zainab Hassan: I create make-up tutorials and document my life as a freelance make-up artist to inspire others to pursue their dreams and also give make up tips along the way while celebrating people that look like me.

What does beauty mean to you ?

Zainab Hassan: Beauty to me means being unapologetically yourself.

What is the future of beauty ?

Zainab Hassan: The future of the beauty industry is really understanding that everybody defines beauty in a different way and celebrating that in all areas is how we go forward

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Zainab Hassan: So many! Here are just a few: @joyadenuga, @kingmalimagic, @paintedbyesther

KIEANAA, @BEAUTYBYKEEKSX

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Kieanaa: My look is definitely having a flawless base and some days having an amazing or daring eye look to go with it. The looks I do honestly depend on how I feel. Some days, I like to do warm or smoky looks as they always complement my skin tone and you can’t go wrong using brown/golden tones. There are some days where I love to play with colour and I think purple is such a lovely colour on my skin.

I do this because growing up I rarely ever saw brown/dark skin make-up gurus and I want Black women to be able to find a tutorial that is suited for them perfectly. I want them to know that they can play with eyeshadow no matter what colour it is. Nothing is too bright for us and for us to think that we can be creative without restrictions.

What does beauty mean to you ?

Kieanaa: Beauty to me means creativity and freedom. I love being able to scroll on TikTok and watch the different types of tutorials and looks, it’s amazing seeing how different people are when it comes to make-up. It also means confidence, although I do love myself with and without make-up there is that extra boost when you have on an amazing pair of eyelashes or a unique eye look.

What is the future of beauty ?

Kieanaa: I would like to think that the future of beauty would be inclusive. Beauty products are made with skin tones and types in mind, not just for people with clear or fair skin. I would also like to believe that the future or beauty would be elevated. I would love to see things that I haven’t seen before, not just products but the industry as a whole.

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Kieanaa: I love @elizabeth_wosho, she is really a jack of all trades. I honestly feel like there is nothing she cannot do, like she does nails, paints, make-up and don’t get me started on her fashion sense. I feel like she will one day make waves in the beauty community cause her creativity is through the roof.

DOMINIQUE ALLISON, @DOMINIQUEALLISONX

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Dominique Allison: I’m a content creator and I create make-up and beauty related content. I have a love and passion for art and make-up and it all started when I found out I could combine the two to create crazy and out-of-the-box make-up looks!

What does beauty mean to you ?

Dominique Allison: Beauty is within and it’s original to you. To me, beauty is not just physical beauty, it’s your imperfections, your qualities, and your mindset too.

What is the future of beauty ?

Dominique Allison: The future of beauty is diversity and inclusivity. For many years, beauty has been dominated by a specific standard and a specific look. However, some brands are finally changing that standard to include those who have not been represented before. I hope more brands will follow suit in the future!

Which Black creatives do you want everyone else to know about?

Dominique Allison: I would love to spotlight @sibyllete, she creates very satisfying and relaxing content taking macro videos of her applying make-up. I would also love to spotlight @rafiqahakhdar as she creates stunning make-up tutorials and her amazing personality always shines through! Lastly, I would love to spotlight @tyrajanea as she creates beautiful, flawless make-up looks!
