Dazed Digital’s head of fashion chooses COSRX’s Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for her Product of the Week

Emma Hope Allwood is Dazed Digital’s head of fashion, a Margiela Tabi-wearing Taurus whose lockdown beauty transformation saw her switch her signature slicked back dark hair for peachy, beachy waves. Here, she shares her choice for Product of the Week – a weekly round-up of the Dazed Beauty team and wider community’s must-have buys.

Brand: COSRX

Product: Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (100ml)

Price: £24

When I was seven, I had pet snails. Not those giant ones you get from the pet shop, but rescue snails from the garden – I used to keep them in a big plastic box outside, and really enjoyed how much their slimy trails would traumatise my brother. What I’m trying to say is: maybe I’m predisposed to be the kind of person who isn’t averse to rubbing snail goo on my face.

My girlfriend is a big COSRX fan, but I reckon I first came across the Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (phew) on Reddit, where I’ve been casually haunting SCA for the best part of a decade. And while I only purchased it recently, in search of products that would help me bring the glow as we head into winter, I’m already a fan.

With the ‘96’ standing for 96 per cent snail mucin (which the brand says is 100 per cent cruelty free) the essence has got a gooey, almost stringy consistency unlike any beauty product I’ve used before. It might sound gross, but it isn’t really. According to COSRX, the product “helps protect the skin from moisture loss while improving skin elasticity”, and “helps repair and soothes red, sensitive skin after breakouts by replenishing moisture”.

So, does it work? While it’s just one step in my hydration routine (which like every other 20-something alive also features The Ordinary hyaluronic acid, and my HG moisturiser, E45) I definitely feel my usually dry skin is noticeably more dewy after just a couple of pumps. Rather than immediately absorbing, it feels almost like a light mask, with a slightly tacky touch. It basically leaves my face slimy, in a chic, runway-esque, glowing-from-within way rather than a sweaty one. What more could a girl want?

Who would use it… Patrick Bateman would be all over this.

If I could go back in time and give this product to anybody it would be... My fellow pale girl Queen Elizabeth I, because I think her skin was probably crying out for some hydration.

If it was an astrological sign it would be… The ultimate water sign: Pisces!
