Jeffree Star breaks silence on Tati Westbrook’s dramatic accusations

TextDazed Digital

The controversial beauty YouTuber released a video to apologise to James Charles and (sort of) address the claims against him

Three weeks ago, Tati Westbrook opened Pandora’s Box once again and dug up all the beauty drama we thought was long buried.

In a video entitled ‘Breaking My Silence’, the YouTuber claimed that her feud with James Charles was started by ‘poisonous lies’ she was fed by Jefree Star and Shane Dawson. If you’ve not kept up – which is probably for the best – we put together an explainer of everything to know so far.

Since then, Jeffree Star has been dropped by Morphe, but hadn’t addressed the new drama until yesterday. Taking to YouTube to share his version of events, he dropped a 10-minute video entitled ‘Doing What’s Right’ and (sort of) addressed the claims against him.

“I’m so quick to grab my phone and say what is on my mind in that moment, without really thinking about the ramifications of my words, my actions, and for the first time in a very long time I’m really reflecting on my behaviour,” he explained on his delayed response. He explains that he hasn’t been on social media for weeks and has been avoiding the drama. He adds: “A lot of things that are happening and have been said, are false.”

While he claims he “will not be entertaining it”, and won’t be providing receipts or screenshots, he adds that “My lawyers are entertaining it behind the scenes.” He follows up with lots of apology rhetoric that claim he’s “fully admitting my flaws” and that “when you accept that you are the problem, you can become the solution” – despite not apologising specifically for any of the terrible things he’s said and done in the past. Star does, however, take the opportunity to apologise to James, admitting the drama could have been resolved offline had he gone to him directly.

The video then takes a confusing turn with Star addressing the Black Lives Matter movement for the first time – previously staying silent on the matter on all of his channels. “Breonna Taylor still has no justice. Black trans women are being murdered every day and the news is silent,” he says. Yet, his own history of violent, racist comments are not mentioned or acknowledged.

Unsurprisingly people are calling him out on Twitter for ‘hijack-tivism’, a way of using the unlawful deaths of Black people as a way of deflecting from his inexcusable behaviour. “You guys can’t seriously think that he talked about blm because he cares. where’s the petition links? the donation links?,” questioned one user. Another said: “The only part of Jeffree Star’s video that you need to see: his attempt to use the death of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and other victims of a failed justice system... as a distraction from his makeup youtube drama. This isn’t performative activism, this is hijack-tivism.”
