Glossier pledges $500,000 to support Black-owned beauty businesses

TextAlex Peters

The beauty brand has also donated $500K to Black Lives Matter, joining Deciem, Sunday Riley, and more who have made donations

Glossier has taken a stand against systemic racism and white supremacy and committed it’s support to the Black community. As protests have erupted throughout the US over the past week in response to police brutality and institutionalised racial violence, the beauty brand has pledged a donation of $1 million to the cause.

“We stand in solidarity with the fight against systemic racism, white supremacy, and the historic oppression of the Black community,” the brand said in a statement shared on its social platforms and by founder Emily Weiss. Backing up this solidarity with monetary support, Glossier will be donating $500k to organisations fighting racial injustice including Black Lives Matter, The NAACP Legal Defense, and Educational Fund and the Marsh P. Johnson Institute.

In an effort to make an impact within the beauty industry itself, the brand is also setting up an initiative to support Black-owned beauty businesses in the form of $500k worth of grants. More information about this will be released in the coming weeks.

While many brands and businesses across industries have made statements of solidarity, few have put their money where their mouths are, particularly on the scale of Glossier. A number of beauty brands, however, have been stepping up.

DECIEM, the parent company of The Ordinary, is donating $100,000 across Black Lives Matter and The NAACP Legal Defence & Educational Fund. Skincare brand Sunday Riley has committed to donate $50,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in honour of George Floyd. Kosas pledged $20,000 to organisations including Black Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter LA, and Color of Change.

Summer Fridays, Maybelline, NYX, Urban Decay, Caudalie, Morphe, Augustinus Bader, Marc Jacobs Beauty, and Ole Henriksen are among other brands who have all donated undisclosed amounts to organisations including Black Lives Matter, ACLU, and the Minnesota Freedom Fund.

Herbivore Botanicals announced 100 percent of its profits from over the weekend would go to ACLU, Black Lives Matter, and the Minnesota Freedom Fund, while Noto Botanics will be donating a portion of all sales to the George Floyd Fund, Reclaim the Block, and the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
