Meet Jazmin Bean, the paradoxical pop star with an otherworldly look

TextDominic Cadogan

From pushing creative boundaries to how Nicki Minaj makes them feel, Jazmin Bean gives their answers for the Dazed 100 pop quiz

Check out the full 2020 Dazed 100 list, and vote for Jazmin’s idea – which is up for a grant from the £50,000 Dazed and Converse Ideas Fund – here.

Musician and artist Jazmin Bean is a paradox, a mash-up of saccharine sweet and a nightmare – but that’s exactly how they like it. “I want to influence the future by pushing boundaries politically, musically, in film, beauty, and in the mainstream media. A lot needs to change, and loud art is the best way to do it,” they explain on their aesthetic.

That in-your-face attitude permeates everything they do, particularly their music. “It’s my birthday, so I get to be a cunt,” Jazmin sings sweetly on their single “Birthday Bitch” and in the accompanying video, smash up a birthday cake, before being later seen wielding a baseball bat studded with nails – painted baby blue, of course.

From their fave Tim Burton character to their guilty pleasure (spoiler alert: it’s songs from Glee), get to know them in a series of quick-fire questions below as they take our pop quiz, and head here to vote for their idea: creating a video project for their first album.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Jazmin Bean: A filmmaker.

What clique were you in in high school.

Jazmin Bean: No clique – I had minimal to no friends and was often isolated.

Why do you do what you do?

Jazmin Bean: It keeps me motivated in every other aspect of my life and it’s so fulfilling. I feel like the world needs people that can elevate the outlook.

What issues are you most passionate about?

Jazmin Bean: I’m passionate about animal rights and police brutality and basically just changing the system we are trapped in, because it’s obviously not working out.

Who do you think is making real change in the world?

Jazmin Bean: People that are rebelling against the system we are living in are making the biggest changes, but also activists and people who push boundaries in all of the barriers we live in.

“Community to me means people that can make you feel safe and are fighting for the same thing” – Jazmin Bean

If you were in charge for a day, what law would you invent?

Jazmin Bean: If I was in charge for a day I’d remove all authority figures from being in authority and I’d make it a legal requirement for all cops to have the words ‘POO BUM’ tattooed on their heads.

Then I would ban the whole concept of how cops function right now because seriously this system is not working and we’re seeing that for the worst now. I’d also make it so that there’s a cap on how rich you can get. There are loads more things that I’ve missed, I could go on forever.

What does community mean to you?

Jazmin Bean: Community to me means people that can make you feel safe and are fighting for the same thing.

How does your community inspire your creativity?

Jazmin Bean: Seeing the people around me push boundaries makes me want to do it more and harder.

Explain your Dazed 100 grant idea in one sentence?

Jazmin Bean: Sharp hill.

Why should people support your idea?

Jazmin Bean: People should support my idea because I’m really really passionate about it and I feel this body of work can push a lot of boundaries.

When do you feel most creative?

Jazmin Bean: At night.

How do you get over an artistic block?

Jazmin Bean: Art blocks are really hard for me and I usually don’t force myself out of them, but watching and listening to art that inspires me helps.

Name three things that inspire you?

Jazmin Bean: Fashion, music, film.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever seen?

Jazmin Bean: It was BABYMETAL, the energy was really nice.

If you could own one piece of art, what would it be?

Jazmin Bean: I would own an original Tim Burton piece.

What’s the last thing you made?

Jazmin Bean: Paintings.

What’s a lesson that you learned the hard way?

Jazmin Bean: Don’t rush things.

Which fictional character do you most identify with?

Jazmin Bean: I love Emily from Corpse Bride.

What’s your secret talent?

Jazmin Bean: I’m not sure, not many things are a secret for me. I really like to dance and paint.

What’s overrated?

Jazmin Bean: Natural beauty.

What’s underrated?

Jazmin Bean: Jazmin Bean.

What keeps you motivated?

Jazmin Bean: Other people’s art that I enjoy and living in my own creative world.

Which film do you never get bored of?

Jazmin Bean: I never get bored of Tim Burton films and I’ve really been loving Ari Aster films right now too.

What song is stuck in your head right now?

Jazmin Bean: The song stuck in my head right now is a bad one so I’m not going to say lol.

What did you dream last night?

Jazmin Bean: I dreamt that another person in the music industry laughed at me on the bus.

What piece of clothing means the most to you?

Jazmin Bean: I don’t have a certain piece at the moment; I’ve been selling a lot of stuff to make way for a new style and new clothes to come.

“People sometimes think I’m rude or have a false perception of me because I’m very honest and upfront. Or that I’m cocky because I like to celebrate my achievements and my work and live my truth” – Jazmin Bean

What advice would you give your past self?

Jazmin Bean: Care less about what others are saying and thinking about you because it’s the dumbest thing in the world.

What’s your favourite slang phrase?

Jazmin Bean: Innit babes Xx.

What’s your ultimate guilty pleasure?

Jazmin Bean: Maybe that I really like the show Glee and I have Glee songs on my playlist that I skip when I’m with other people.

What will the world look like in 2050?

Jazmin Bean: I hope the world will be evolved and all artists will be pushing their visions to the extreme but the world will probably look like trash on fire :,(.

What’s a misconception people often have about you?

Jazmin Bean: People sometimes think I’m rude or have a false perception of me because I’m very honest and upfront. Or that I’m cocky because I like to celebrate my achievements and my work and live my truth idk lol.

What book changed your life?

Jazmin Bean: The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy.

What song hits you the hardest?

Jazmin Bean: “RIP 2 My Youth” by The Neighbourhood, “Hot” by Avril Lavigne, “Trompe le Monde” by Pixies, the Dark Crystal theme tune, and “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj – I know that’s not one.

Which living person do you admire most and why?

Jazmin Bean: I’m not sure if I want to say I admire anyone I haven’t met or don’t know that much about because they could actually be trash so I’ll say my mum.
