CEO of creative hair brand Taiba Taiba shares her inspiration and process behind the environmentally conscious sculpture

Happy Earth Day! Today on Dazed Beauty, we’re looking at ways in which the beauty industry can be more eco-minded via investigations on refillable products and carbon neutral beauty, as well as celebrating those with sustainable practices like make-up artist Athena Paginton

In the world of hair, Taiba Taiba – CEO of creative hair brand Keash London – is constantly honing her work and trying to reduce waste as much as she can. To put herself to the test, she challenged herself to create a hair installation in 48 hours created out of upcycled materials – inspired by a 24-hour DJ set she watched during quarantine. “I wanted to pay homage to Mother Nature in celebration of Earth Day,” Taiba says on the inspiration behind the look. “Given everything that’s going on, I thought it would be nice to take a minute and celebrate the resilient planet we live on.

Taking a stool from one of Keash’s pop-ups, Taiba wanted to create a “sick floral design”. “The process itself was largely freestyled,” she explains. “I used synthetic hair and wire to create the different shapes like flowers, butterflies, and the bee and added structure as I went on.” Created over 48 hours and captured on video, the final look is described by Taiba as “playful, uplifting, free-spirited, and weird.” But, most importantly, it’s completely upcycled.

“I tend to upcycle as much as possible because I hate waste and using things unnecessarily,” she says. “I had some unopened hair extensions at home, as well as scraps from previous shoots and events and wanted to put them to good use. People are quick to throw away extensions because they’re cheap but they’re essentially still plastic headed to landfills.” On the importance of upcycling and finding new life for extensions and more she adds: “Upcycling inspires creativity and forces you to think outside the box. Relying on materials I already had definitely added to the challenge.”

Taiba also notes the impact she has found on her creativity since being in isolation, enhanced by the fact the that she relies on working with people usually. “It’s forced me into a situation where I have to think in more creative ways. I have had to actively try to stay busy, reworking everything from my day-to-day to my business model. I’ve learned a lot about how much I can do and how creative I can get when I’m forced to put my mind to it,” she says.
