Glossier closes all stores amid coronavirus pandemic

Founder Emily Weiss announced the news effective immediately

Glossier founder Emily Weiss has announced that the brand will be closing all its permanent and temporary retail locations for at least the next two weeks effective from today.

Weiss says the decision was made to “help mitigate the spread of COVIS-19” and includes delaying the opening of the Glossier pop-up in Arizona scheduled for next week.

Originally planning to take the position of “let’s follow, not lead” on the retail front, Weiss says after reading a piece in the Atlantic, “Cancel Everything,” on the importance of social distancing she reconsidered. “As a first-time CEO running a five-year-old start-up through its first global crisis, I read that Atlantic piece from bed last night with a heavy heart,” Weiss writes in her statement. “This quickly became an easy, albeit painful, decision.”

She continues: “From a company perspective, by closing our stores, we’ll sacrifice some near-term business goals, but we’re prepared to put public health ahead of our bottom line.”

The New York flagship store alone sees 2,000 people pass through its door every day, while the London pop-up that was initially scheduled for a four-month run was made a permanent location for the rest of 2020 due to its popularity – over 100,000 visitors attended. 

Weiss ends her statement saying “To everyone reading: We’re not alarmists, we’re realists” and calls for other business owners to remember their core values. “This is a time for us to remember our humanity,” she writes.
