The 6 weirdest things we learned from Grimes’s pregnancy beauty routine

TextAlex Peters

From demons to Kardashians, Grimes shared her beauty secrets in a new tutorial

Grimes is currently housing what we can only imagine to be an alien baby (AKA the offspring of Elon Musk) in her body. Yesterday, she and little baby War Nymph took themselves down to Vogue to film a tutorial in which the Dazed Beauty cover star shares her beauty tips and tricks as well as giving us a glimpse into life after being “knocked up.” Pregnancy has turned her skin super red, she says for example, which makes doing her make-up much harder.

We also find out that having “claws” makes her happy but she can’t often have long nails due to being a musician, and that for a woman whose fitness workout includes screaming, sword fighting and deprivation tanks, her skincare regime is actually pretty standard stuff: cleanser, mist Korean essence, vitamin C serum, and sunscreen.

Here are the six most important things we learned from the tutorial.

SHE BURNT OFF A LOT OF HER HAIR RECENTLY

Grimes says that she is definitely going to let her kid use experiment with make-up and hair dye when they are older, explaining that she herself started secretly bleaching her hair when she was 11 years old. After going lighter and lighter over the course of a few years, pretending that her hair was being naturally bleached by the sun, her parents finally caught on and confronted her.

After decades of bleaching, Grimes says her hair finally reached breaking point – literally – and she lost a large chunk of it. She now lets her friend bleach it professionally rather than doing it herself. Pregnancy is helping with growth but it is still in such a nightmare state that she says she has to slather it in coconut oil in order to keep it looking normal.

She also likes to put biodegradable glitter Bioglitz in her parting.

SHE PUTS ICE ON HER FACE BEFORE GOING ON STAGE

To calm down the redness in her face before going on stage or doing a shoot, Grimes says she puts ice on her face or uses a rose quartz face roller. Like the rest of us, she is also a big Fenty fan, using in the tutorial both the primer and a “super white” shade of foundation which she calls clown make-up and applies with her fingers.

SHE USES BLACK LIP LINER TO MAKE HER LIPS LOOK FULLER

Overlining her lips with a black sheer lip liner, Grimes says it makes her lips look really nice and that if she was stuck with only one item of make-up it would be that lipliner which she wears every day.

She then finishes the look by patting on a Pat McGrath Labs matte lipstick. “I like the look of being pretty but being ravaged by war,” she says in the most Grimes-y statement of the tutorial.

SHE LIKES PAT MCGRATH EYELINER, BUT NOT FOR THE REASON YOU’D THINK

In what isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement for the brand, Grimes says she’s likes the Pat McGrath Labs eyeliners because after a few hours they start coming down your face. While Grimes likes the edgy “tears of darkness” vibe that gives her, it is probably not what most people are looking for in their eye pencils.

Grimes then makes the “creative decision” to put blue mascara on only one eye although she believes that she doesn’t look good in mascara. To finish off the eyes she puts a silver eyeshadow in her inner corners.

SHE LIKES THE BAGS UNDER HER EYES BECAUSE THEY MAKE HER LOOK SCARY

To enhance her bags (yes, you read that right), she even puts red eyeshadow underneath her eyes to make herself look more demonic. She also says that she misses her unibrow which she wrecked in high school by plucking it and wishes she had it back.

SHE LOVES THE FULL KARDASHIAN MAKE-UP LOOK

Coming from what she calls the “neanderthal” instinct, Grimes says she likes the Kardashian-esque look of the big eyes, the lips, and the full contour although it doesn’t look good on her so she doesn’t wear the look herself. She also says Bollywood make-up is her favourite, citing the actress in the film Devdas as having the prettiest make-up.
