Sustainable lipstick brand La Bouche Rouge becomes even more eco-friendly

The brand’s refillable lipsticks will now be one hundred percent vegan

As we all know by now, our planet is not well. It’s more important than ever that we all do our bit to be more sustainable and to cut down on our plastic use, on a larger scale and in our day to day lives. A great place to start is with your make-up bag. The cosmetics industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging every year, the majority of which is not recyclable.

Which is why we are such big fans of Paris beauty brand, La Bouche Rouge. Launched in 2017, La Bouche Rouge makes beautiful refillable lipsticks in elegant cases with the aim of reducing our environmental impact. Avoiding plastic at all costs, the brand utilises reusable metal molds instead of single-use silicone while the re-fill mechanism contains no polyoxymethylene or polyethylene. Not only that, but for every lipstick sold, the brand also donates 100 litres of safe drinking water to Eau Vive Internationale which works alongside rural communities in Africa to help provide access to clean water.

And if all that wasn’t enough, La Bouche Rouge is now going vegan.

From today, the lipstick formula, already cruelty-free, will also contain no beeswax, while the previously leather case which housed the lipstick will be made with one hundred percent vegan leather – created from recycled polyester and free from microplastics. A year in the making, it was a chance encounter with Stella McCartney and her invaluable guidance, the brand say, that finally helped them land on their leather alternative.

“We are committed to avoid plastic at the maximum. Do you realise that a billion lipsticks are thrown away every year in the world? I believe that it is impossible today to create a new beauty House without thinking of the environment,” La Bouche Rouge founder Nicolas Gerlier told us. “It is a fact that we cannot continue to consume the way we do. There is no planet B!”

The lipsticks are available from today on their website.
