Is face jewellery the new make-up?

TextJules and Gebs

Underground beauty curators @ravvebeauty shine a light on the colourful creatives making face jewellery happen

The brainchild of best friends Jules and Gebs, @RavveBeauty is the Instagram account dedicated to showcasing and celebrating all that is disturbing, disarming and alluring when it comes to underground beauty. Doubled up contact lenses, iridescent face shimmer, obscure facial piercings, heads shaved to look like flowers in full bloom, unibrows, no brows, wiggly brows. Lending us their well-honed eye, here they pick their top beauty Instagrams of the month.

 Come through dripping! A few days ago, we were checking out the @AREA show at NYFW and it didn’t take us long to realise that the jewels were stealing the show. Not any kind of jewels. These were jewels that entirely covered the models’ faces. But of course, this is a  well-established phenomenon in the underground world of Instagram beauty, one that we’ve been championing for a while.

We can all agree that wearing jewellery isn’t really a new thing. It dates all the way back to ancient Egyptian times. Possibly even earlier. To us, jewellery is about using shiny objects to bring attention to the very features we want to highlight: our ears, necks, wrists and fingers… So why has it taken this long for us to start wearing in on our face? And we don't mean the kind of cool girl and outsider boy rocking up to a party with a nose ring, lip ring, eyebrow stud or snakebites. We mean sumptuous chandeliers that hang from our hairlines, bejewelled frames that encase our noses, and decorative pearls that sit atop our cheekbones. The list is endless. But fear not, we’ve put together a list of beauty hackers that are doing it best.

@kerenwolf

The Israeli jeweller mixes romance and hardcore metal to create decorative face adorners to be worn everywhere from the lips to the lids.

@isshehungry

The category is: visual mindfuck. The looks of the nightlife supernova have a maze-like quality that makes it impossible to tell what’s real and fake, what’s make-up, digital editing or jewellery.

@joanne_t_jewellery

Malaysian jewellery designer Joanne T makes diamond and pearl encrusted face sculptures designed to delicately frame your nose.

@darya_kholodnykh

Make-up artist Darya Kholodnykh blends traditional make-up artistry with unusual face jewellery, everything from delicate nose pincers to chains draped from ear to ear.

@cupidsvault

Dazed Beauty Community member Cupid is the New York-based artist creating surreal looks out of bejewelled safety pins and decorative facial pearls.

@juanitagrillz

Creating intricate, extravagant and avant-garde custom designs, Adrien Flores is the new prince of grills. Follow him now before he blows up.

@Nastia_pilepchuk

Looking at the Russian doll, one could wonder why she hides behind show-stopping, sometimes frightening bejewelled masks. Mysterious and mystical.

@damselfrau

The Norwegian artist displays a level of craftsmanship rarely seen on Instagram and proves that when it comes to beauty, what’s hidden is often more enticing than what’s revealed.
