Editing ‘glitch’ blamed in Kim Kardashian’s latest photoshop scandal

A Skims ad featuring the star has been pulled after viewers noticed heavy editing around her waist

Fresh off Khloé Kardashian speaking out in defense of her right to retouch pictures of herself, sister Kim has been caught up in a controversy over a video which viewers pointed out appeared to be heavily edited.

In an ad for her underwear line Skims, Kardashian is shown lounging on her side, running her hand along her waist. After airing last week, the clip quickly went viral when a user on TikTok highlighted a moment when Kardashian’s finger becomes very distorted right around the time when it reaches her famously curved hips. “Who approved of this editing???” asked @alexkelly2014 in the TikTok post which has been viewed almost 24 million times since being uploaded four days ago.

The clip prompted backlash from many people who criticised the role the Kardashian-Jenner family plays in perpetuating and upholding unrealistic beauty standards and toxic body image. “They literally created this beauty standard but can’t even keep it up”, one user commented on the post while another said, “So sad they create these body issue problems and then complain”. “They just refuse to do anything natural huh,” was another reply.

However, now the brand has issued a statement blaming the distortion on a glitch and revealing that they have pulled the original ad, replacing it instead with the “correct” video. Not only that, but the Skims spokesperson says that Kardashian had specifically requested her waist not be edited for the ad and that no part of her body was digitally retouched.

“The Skims commercial that aired last week featuring the Fits Everybody collection did initially have an error as a result of the video losing its quality during the uploading process,” the statement given to Page Six reads. “Immediately after it was noticed by the team, the video was pulled, and the glitch-free version was uploaded and ran for the remainder of the time on air. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused Kim and our customers.”

This latest Kardashian drama is in stark contrast to the controversy that surrounded Khloé back in April. The reality star made headlines after her lawyers threatened legal action against social media accounts who had posted a candid, unedited image of her. In response to the criticism that followed, Khloé spoke out to say she would continue to edit her images, use filters, and good lighting “unapologetically”. “My body, my image and how I choose to look and what I want to share is my choice. It’s not for anyone to decide or judge what is acceptable or not anymore.”
