Comme Des Garçons’ ROUGE fragrance is a seductive escape from mundanity

Taking connotations of ‘red’ and turning them on their head, the fashion house’s new fragrance is the latest Product of the Week

Beauty fanatic Dominic Cadogan is a writer, editor, and former assistant editor of Dazed Beauty. Their ideal date is April 25, because it’s not too hot, not too cold – all you need is a light jacket! Here, they share their choice for Product of the Week – a weekly round-up of the Dazed Beauty team and wider community must-have buys.

WHAT IS IT?

Brand: Comme des Garçons

Product: ROUGE eau de parfum

Price: £120

WHY SHOULD I CARE?

“We are not interested in shaking up convention simply for the idea of shaking things up, but rather in creating with freedom,” explains Christian Astuguevieille, creative director of Comme des Garçons Parfum. “We like to leave room for all kinds of concepts and inspirations, and to treat our raw materials in innovative ways.”

Comme des Garçons ROUGE is no exception to this mentality, with Astuguevieille choosing to investigate ‘red’ and its connotations – like passion, fire, and blood – and turn them on their head. Using earthy red ingredients like beetroot as a starting point, they modified the fragrance bringing ginger, Egyptian geranium, and woody patchouli.

“The beauty of ROUGE is its inviting nature, evolving as you wear it, deepening with warm woody notes”

ROUGE’s accompanying visuals – captured by photographer and director Jordan Hemingway – are a seductive offering, following a latex-wearing model who cavorts among luxurious silk while surreal elements, like flames and blood, are interspersed.

For me, the beauty of ROUGE is its inviting nature, evolving as you wear it. It starts off extremely fresh with an immediately intriguing spike of pink peppercorn. As it continues reacting with your skin, it invites you further, deepening with warm woody notes.

As with all Comme des Garçons fragrances, it’s up to the wearer, whether you’re he, she, or they, so spray liberally and invite others (as soon as it’s safe to be close to one another) to take a deep sniff.
