Detox tea brand Teami ordered to pay $1 million over misleading claims

Cardi B and Jordin Sparks have also been warned over their undisclosed ads for Teami

On Thusday, the Federal Trade Commission made a move to start legal action against a detox tea company for misleading its customers.

Teami and its owners earned millions from unsubstantiated health claims about its products and using paid influencers such as Cardi B and singer Jordin Sparks who failed to disclose their connection to the company, the FTC alleges.

According to the Commission’s complaint, the Teami website claimed its teas could treat cancer, prevent and treat colds, reduce cholesterol and unclog arteries, and decrease migraines. It also claimed that its products could cause substantial weight loss, burn fat, and boost metabolic rate. In addition to this, the FTC says that Teami paid influencers to promote its products without enforcing the endorsements be clearly disclosed as paid advertisements as in keeping with the FTC’s Endorsement Guide.

The FTC has ordered the company to put a halt to these practices and to return $1 million to consumers who were harmed. Teami has agreed to do clinical testing on humans to prove its health claims.

The Commission has also issued warnings to 10 influencers over their failure to comply with the endorsement guidelines. These include Cardi B, Jordin Sparks, TV host Adrienne Bailon, actress Alexa PenaVega, model Brittany Renner, Darnell Nicole from WAGS Miami, actress Jenicka Lopez, actress Leyla Milani, Instagram influencer Princess Mae Love, and fitness influencer Katya Elise Henry. Demi Lovato and Kylie Jenner have previously promoted the brand but did not receive warning letters.
