The campaign for new fragrance Copper celebrates the beauty of brown and black skin

Ever since Comme des Garçons first released fragrance in 1998 – anti-perfume Odeur 53 which smelt of everyone’s favourite scents burnt rubber, hot light bulbs, and nail polish –  the brand has continued to release genre-defying fragrances that marry weirdness with desirability. And now CDG has just dropped its latest Eau de parfum: Copper.

Housed in the brands signature pebble bottle designed by Rei Kawakubo, Copper is described as an “olfactive exploration of perceived differences and their harmonious alignment,” and contains the slightly more traditional notes of galbanum, peppercorns, Madagascan ginger, vanilla, and myrrh. 

To launch the fragrance, photographer Tyler Mitchell shot and directed a campaign that celebrates copper through the championing of black and brown skin tones. “I wanted to visually link the idea of copper — a material typically perceived to be cheaper than gold — to the idea of black and brown skin and richness as a way of elevating the two,” Mitchell wrote on Instagram. “This was my first time doing a campaign top to bottom. From the research and creative direction to directing the film, shooting photographs and logo placement and layout. I’m so honoured it could be with Comme Des Garçons.”
