Forever 21 accused of fat shaming customers with diet bars

TextDominic Cadogan

Enraged customers have taken to Twitter after finding the snacks in plus-size looks ordered online, but the retailer has claimed it was an ‘oversight’

While fashion labels like Nike and Rihanna’s Fenty have made strides towards inclusion of plus-size customers with a diverse range of mannequins, the fashion and beauty industry has a long way to go towards genuine acceptance.

Forever 21 illustrated this today, after it was revealed it had been sending diet bars to customers who ordered plus-sized clothing online. “Forever 21 really put a fucking diet bar in with my plus size clothing order...I fucking can’t” said @PinkMaggitKat on Twitter. “I haven’t been able to stop crying about it since I opened it.” Others were equally outraged: “What are you trying to Tell me Forever 21, I’m FAT, LOSE WEIGHT?,” says @MissGirlGames

In a statement on BBC, the retailer responded to criticism and claims it was an “oversight”. “From time to time, Forever 21 surprises our customers with free test products from third parties in their e-commerce orders,” it reads. “The freebie items in question were included in all online orders, across all sizes and categories, for a limited time and have since been removed. We sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused to our customers, as this was not our intention in any way.”
