This season Parisian trailblazers Y/Project joined the Pitti Uomo AW19 schedule in Florence. Following in the footsteps of designers such as Raf Simons and Hood by Air, Y/Project’s Glenn Martens was chosen as the guest designer to show at the prestigious menswear platform.
Long considered the ultimate “insiders” label, Y/Project recently emerged into mainstream consciousness with their AW18 thigh-high Uggs and now count Rihanna and Beyonce among their fans.
Last night Martens showed his latest collection in the magical Santa Maria Novella’s Grand Cloister, one of the most exquisite churches in Florence, and the many guests (Martens wanted the show to be open to as many people as possible) were given torches – which would be the only light illuminating the clothes.
Both men and women walked the show, with Martens telling Vogue “I don’t specifically think menswear or womenswear, and that’s always been the approach for me with Y/Project; we are just pushing individuality. The same jacket can be elegant on a man, or on a woman.” Make-up was equally unisex, with both men and women having extremely bare-faced make-up looks, complete with undereye bags and chapped lips. Hair was kept minimal , either tucked behind ears, scooped back or worn long while overall casting was diverse, a plentitude striking models with angular features.
