90s it-girls Chloë Sevigny, Natasha Lyonne and Tara Subkoff have banded together to bring us a film about cultural narcissism and cyber-bullying. #Horror depicts the near impossibility of escaping school bullies in the age of technology and social media. A fact that the six 12-year-old girls find out the hard way, in what looks like a plush suburban setting.
The film also stars Annabelle Dexter-Jones, who plays a nanny terrorised by her employer (Chloë Sevigny). Speaking to Dazed in the latest issue, she said: “I was intimidated by Chloë, but she’s amazing. She knows exactly what she’s doing.” And who wouldn’t be intimidated by Sevigny when she looks so cool (and a tad scary) in big furs, casually puffing away?
The directorial debut of actress and former Imitation of Christ designer, Tara Subkoff, #Horror was inspired by the question “What is horror to you?”. A friend’s daughter answered this by revealing a chilling tale of being cyber-bullied – even after moving continents.
The film generated a lot of hype at Cannes in May, partially due to an anti-bullying protest arranged by Subkoff and attended by almost 100 local French teenagers. That was until the police shut them down.
