What was the first photo you took that really meant something?
It was while I was at RISD. The guy in the pic was my best friend. There was this whole sense of magic coming into my work. Everything worked out but I didn’t realize that this thing was happening. It’s him looking at himself, me looking at him. It became this romantic, dark, magical dreamy moment. I was deeply attracted, in love with my best friend. In this moment we shared everything that had happened between us which was like romance, magic, love, art. So the picture for me, I’ll look back on it when I’m forty and go, my first true love. It was like capturing on film something you can’t really plan for.
