Ligia Dias
"I love necklaces," says Swiss-born designer, Ligia Dias. "Because with
the simplest gesture, they can magnify the silhouette." And indeed, her
striking pieces which combines offbeat elements like grosgrain, pearls
and leather does just that, making a bold but elegant statement. Rei
Kawakubo, Alber Elbaz and Philip Lim are just some of the visionaries
who have tapped her unique aesthetic to enhance their catwalk shows but
it is her Bauhaus themed collection of neck adornments under her own
Ligia Dias Colliers line that is establishing her as an artist in her
own right.
Is making jewellery very personal for you?
My collection is based on one jewellery piece Anni Albers did in the
40's. It is all about standards. I have no knowledge in jewellery craft
but I can assemble and sew. I am doing jewellery in my way so indeed,
it is very personal.
What is your idea of elegance?
Elegance is an attitude. It is like Love: a feeling, something that you
sweat, that makes you float one level over the mass people. I am
romantic, aren’t I?
What are your plans for 2009?
The launch of my first Men's Jewellery collection! I will present a
small collection of masculine pieces. Certainly more bracelets than
necklaces... But I don’t know all about my 2009 schedule. We’ll see.
One thing after the other is always better!
