Katie Eary

What has the response been towards your collection since graduating from the MA?I have had an amazing response to the Collection...
The first email i received was from Vogue, requesting All my hat samples and a few garment's. The shoot was entitled 'Couture' with Mario Testino and Kate Moss. I was also asked to make some trousers for the shoot especially for Kate Moss, of which Kate Moss liked so much she kept.
Other up and coming editorials/publications will/have been in YOHO magazine and Drama magazine. Nick Knight has done a shoot with all my crystal looks from the shoot, And im currently working on some new pieces for a shoot for POP magazine....
Roisin Murphy has currently taken my gold Swarovski pannier coat on
tour with her,
I have also been commissioned by Selfridges to make 9 body pieces for their window display which goes live this coming London fashion week...
Will you be continuing to design under your own name or are you be looking to join a fashion house / company?Yes, i hope to do both... Currently i am keeping my options open, I am very busy at the moment but am always willing to throw in another ball to juggle. I am also hoping to do the MAN show, but we shall just wait and see......
How much difficulty are you finding succeeding as a designer in your own right now you have graduated? It is more slow than difficult, press is so so important to get to the next step. So its a balance between keeping busy and being patient, on 40% of 'promised' opportunities actually happen, so never expect or rely on anything till its actually happening that day! The day after the show I was twiddling my thumbs trying to think positively through
my hard set negative hang-over, one week later I was trawling London dropping things off for shoots, and getting the Selfridges thing up and running, securing sponsorship for future collections/collaborations/ actually- To be honest this question is too difficult to answer. Success in fashion is like flipping a coin. That applies to anyone in it... but that is what i Hate and Love about it
Why menswear? Menswear is more fun to play with! I believe that men invented 'feminism' but disguised this word as dandy or fopp. We all have it in us to dress up, but in human nature it is always the males who are far more grandosie and beautiful than the female. Its just that since the Victorian era mens fashion became to a slave to 'making things easier.' How did we go from the beautifully tied cravat to a tie with elastic hidden under the collar?... From beautiful dinner/evening shirts to 'non crease no need to iron ever again shirts'. Its like we are starting again and introducing more and more glamour and beauty into menswear, Hence why i consistently go for military looks as the uniform is such a stunning piece of work, and the higher
Ranking you are the more glamourous the uniform. It's all so exciting, and I want to contribute.
How was your experience at the RCA?Fucking fantastic experience! The RCA educated me so much not only to find myself as a designer but to articulate my design which i feel is so important. A designer should fully understand what they are talking about within there design work. I had the most amazing 2 years, I met and worked with people who influenced me in so many ways, I had the
opportunity to travel with competitions I won and sponsorship I could only dream of before I went there. The RCA gave me the confidence to believe in my design which came with understanding it.
What is inspiring you at the moment? The book Animal Farm. For me everything always starts with a book! A couple of months ago I was obsessed with Russian everything due to 'The Master and Margarita' but now i'm looking at 'The politics of the pigs!' which no doubt will have a military twist with the
Rankings of animals... and lots of PIGS!
What are you plans for the rest of the year?Hurry up and get the Selfridges work finished, Continue to working with creative individuals. Meet a straight man in fashion- preferably before Christmas.
Will you be doing another collection?YES! I don't know when how or where, but that's the most exciting bit! I wont start to join the fashion rat race if I can do it in February, but then not for a couple of seasons, once you start you stay in it forever, so I need to be sensible about how I'm going to go about it....
