AIR and Cartier in Tokyo

January 11, 2012

The French maestros talks exclusively about their concepts of MUSE and LOVE

  • Text by Emi Kameoka

Cartier follows an amazing roster of musical artistic collaborations (including Lou Reed and Phoenix) with a new project with the iconic French electronic duo, AIR. The sensual sartorial savants were invited to compose an exclusive soundtrack for the project and Cartier film "Painted Love", unveiled exclusively in Tokyo a couple of weeks back. We spoke to AIR about the story, Tokyo and that singular question, "What is love?"

Satellite Voices: Can you introduce “Painted Love”?
AIR: It was to work on video as we were composing the music for a long traditional soundtrack music.

SV: We heard that you collaborated with the filmmakers throughout the year...
AIR: We had to talk a lot to the filmmakers to know what exactly we had to happened in the head of the painter. The music is the soundtrack of this.

SV: How was it different from soundtracking a film to making your own music?
AIR: It is the translation of an image in music – with our own album we create our own image!

SV: In the video, an artist paints his muse and shows his obsession for his painted love. Please let us know what is a muse for you. Is it something you always think about while you create music?
AIR: In our lyrics we always say you, thinking of the perfect woman that we are searching for and that we will never find. That’s our muse, the unreachable love, the happiness across the ideal(istic) woman.

SV: Please tell us about the performance in Tokyo.
AIR: Japanese don’t say much but... they think a lot. I’m French and that’s the contrary. I’m kidding… AIR fans have my love whoever they are, Japanese or from any country.

SV: What is the part you LOVE about Tokyo?
AIR: I love Japanese machines. Technology seems to be much more affirmative to me than in Europe. Machines are funnier. I also love Japanese food because it is so good for you.

SV: We know this is a difficult question to answer in a short interview but what is LOVE for you?
AIR: Love is this mysterious positive energy that travels in between people, animal, and places, that make any living thing one.
