Billed as a 'music exchange social hub' and with Diplo headlining the official opening, MESH is the brainchild of local-based DJ and promoter Siesta, who with her companies Phreaktion and Wonky Kong has been responsible for bringing Goldie, LTJ Bukem and more to Shanghai. The aim is to foster a community spirit among those involved in the city’s music and nightlife scenes as well as exploring ways to help these scenes grow.

In order to do this, Siesta has arranged two days of seminars and workshops with leading alternative music figures from across China, hosted at KIN. That means roundtables such as Beijing’s DJ Wordy and Shanghai’s DJ V Nutz – the two pioneers of China’s fledgling hip hop scene – discussing the state of rap in the country, and sessions on starting your own music label with speakers such as Han Han of Miniless Records and Sulumi of Shanshui, two of the most influential Chinese underground music labels of recent times.

On top of that, Diplo will be in town on Saturday night to headline the official MESH opening party at The Mixing Room, inside the Mercedes-Benz Arean. Although this isn’t the first time the erstwhile MIA collaborator has been to China, his appearance on the bill with Wordy and V-Nutz makes it a major coup for MESH. In addition, there will also be rooftop parties from The Ice Cream Truck on both Saturday and Sunday at Atanu and a closing ‘block party’ with events at three separate venues on Yongfu Lu.

MESH workshops, seminars and shows at various venues across Shanghai on June 4 and June 5
