Valeria Crociata's Bitter End
We speak to the acclaimed illustrator whose ethereal party world exhibition closes Rome's Oversize season

Valeria Crociata is a Roman illustrator and graphic designer who already has several exhibitions and collaborations with leading Italian and international magazines to her credit. A comprehensive look at her work reveals an eclectic style and a unique approach to different media. Her latest solo show entitled "Bitter End" closes the series of exhibitions entitled the Oversize season that is currently at the Palladium Theatre in Rome, running through to June 12. Her graphic style unfolds within an ethereal world where grotesque creatures, almost suspended in time, embody a very unusual and personal idea of the party.
Satellite Voices: Let's start from the beginning. How did you start in illustration?
Valeria Crociata: My research is aimed at recovering the sincerity of expression that inevitably goes missing at some point. I don't see experience and imitation as an added value, everything I represent moves from the inside. I've always drawn.
SV: What are your main sources of inspiration?
Valeria Crociata: Myself.
SV: The first thing that strikes me when looking at your work is the wide range of styles and media that you use. What tools do you prefer? Is it a random choice or is it determined by the type of emotion you want to convey?
Valeria Crociata: I don't mean to communicate anything but my own vision of things, especially regarding the human condition, moods, and the contradictions in interpersonal relationships. I think all of this reflects in what I do and how I do it. I use whatever is in my case. Tempera, oils, pencil, pastels, but also enamel and spray.
SV: Your work for Oversize revolves around the theme of the party, but what emerges is an almost grotesque sense of melancholy, an atmosphere suspended in time and space. What's the inspiration behind this particular body of work?
Valeria Crociata: I think the previous answer also includes this question, I can say that I identify in the words of Deleuze, when he speaks about deformation realism against the idealism of transformation, when describing the works of Bacon. Mine are deformations that highlight their desires.
SV: What are your upcoming plans?
Valeria Crociata: At the end of August I'll be attending Seminaria Sogninterra a visual arts festival in Maranola.
