Aleksandr Rodchenko Retrospective

August 19

The first Italian retrospective on the Russian artist to kick off the new exhibition season in Rome

  • Text by Flavia Ferrucci

The new Roman exhibition season will open with an exhibition that promises to be one of the most important of the year: the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will host, starting on October 11, the largest Italian retrospective ever held on Aleksandr Rodchenko.

Organized by Moskow's House of Photography Museum (Russia's first museum dedicated to photography, in which the artistic heritage of Rodchenko is collected) and curated by Olga Sviblova, as part of the program of cultural exchange between Italy and Russia, it will be the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to the artist in the country. The exhibition will include about 300 works including original photographs, photomontages and vintage prints, which will show in its totality and variety the poliedric Russian artist's work.

One of the main promoters of the extraordinary creative period of the Russian avant-garde, Rodchenko introduced the Constructivist principles in photography, developing methods and tools for its application. Not only a photographer, the artist was active in many fields: painting, design, theater, film and graphics, opening new paths for the subsequent development of each of them. The exhibition is the result of the long work of collection and storage carried out by the family archives that safeguarded and promoted studies on the immense body of images produced by Rodchenko, with the intention of giving a 360 degrees on its multi-faceted talent.

The exhibition opens on October 11 and will run until January 2012.
