City inspirations with the party animal and music maven Parisian newbie
- Text by Celine Puertas
The pretty Yelena Nikolic, 24 years old, moved from Belgium to Paris a few months ago. She shares with us her fresh viewpoint on the city.
Satellite Voices: What’s your occupation... a) during the day & b) at night?
Yelena Nikolic: a) I work as manager for a Spanish artist called Sutja Gutiérrez, I organise interviews, shoots, I do booking, writing loads of emails... It’s my first experience as manager and it’s really exciting. You can check our website here! b) I usually go for a drink with friends then I cook and watch movies in bed, but sometimes it gets out of control and we go party to a few Parisian clubs until dawn.
SV: Where do you live and what inspires you about that area of town?
Yelena Nikolic: I live in a big flat with friends, in the 10th district. It’s near The Canal Saint Martin, close to a lot of small bars and vintage shops. Every street in Paris has something special, I love walking around watching people, their style, their face, guessing what they are doing in real life… You can see a lot of different things in this city and it’s that eclecticism that inspires me the most.
SV: Do you miss Belgium? When did you move and why?
Yelena Nikolic: I would say no because Belgium is sometimes boring and grey! But it’s not really true, I do miss Belgium for its parties and conviviality. I moved in Paris last summer and it was for two reasons actually, one is professional and the other sentimental.
SV: What does your city mean to you?
Yelena Nikolic: Freedom and possibilities, but also social diversity, flea markets, music and chinese food to name a few!
It’s an amazing city that offers everything you could think of. There is something in the air that you can only find in Paris.
SV: Can you talk about the best creative youth cultures in your town?
Yelena Nikolic: We have a lot of young musical prodigies here. I will quickly mention Club Cheval, juvenile yet mature, erudite but fun-loving, it’s a crew of four DJs/producers coming from northern France and making a new kind of music. They have a residency at the Social Club. They are already travelling around the world spreading new musical moves. The Parisian well-known icons of music Teki Latex and Orgasmic (creators of Sound Pellegrino label) are encouraging them particularly.
SV: What are your plans for the weekend?
Yelena Nikolic: Friday night I’m going to meet friends, eat some tapas, drink wine and talk about life. On Saturday I’ll probably do the same thing in other places and on Sunday I’ll have the famous brunch and a rest hopefully. I would say it’s a classic weekend in Paris for a young woman like me.
