Poetic dream-like naivety from an inspired new Parisian illustrator

  • Text by Violaine Schutz

This talended young illustator has a very back to basics style that embodies an exuberant charm. The major French press seem to think so too, with Delphine Cauly's work appearing in the pages of Elle, Le Bonbon Nuit and Be alongside fashion collaborations with the likes of designers Berangere Claire and Vanessa Bruno. We really love her naive, sensual, poetic and feminine work.

Satellite Voices: What makes you smile?
Delphine Cauly:
My boyfriend. He's really funny.

SV: What was the first thing you ever made?
Delphine Cauly: Drawing. As a child, I filled notebooks full of drawings. But the coolest thing that I created as a child is a very fashionable dress made entirely of supermaket plastic bags.

SV: What’s your dream project?
Delphine Cauly:
I would soon publish an artbook of my work and have a space where I could exhibit my drawings but also objects that I make.

SV: What do you wish you had written / created?
Delphine Cauly: "Ophelia" by John Everett Millais.

SV: Who’s work / art / music would you recommend on checking out?
Delphine Cauly:
In drawing, I love the work of Frederic Poincelet but photography and contemporary art influenced a lot my work: David Hamilton, Richard Avedon, Annette Messager, Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Beuys. In music, I invite anyone to discover the work of Mr Flash (from Ed Banger), who is also the producer of the next Sebastien Tellier album. His world is crazy, very cinematic, and is a friend.

SV: How do you describe your work?
Delphine Cauly:
I hope you can find in my work a certain sensuality, nostalgia, something of adolescence... Time has an important place in my creation, I'm always thinking of a particular moment, a memory.
