Satellite Voices met the celebrated fashion photographer who just opened his new studio in Munich's Neuhausen quarter
- Text by Christine Bierhals
Thomas von Aagh moved from Munich’s outskirts into the city to become a photographer. While he was travelling around the globe - and he still is - he openend his new photo studio in the middle of his hometown in the north western area of Neuhausen. He creates modern fashion and beauty photography that is very energetic, sometimes sensitive and always progressive.
Satellite Voices: How do you describe your work?
Thomas von Aagh: Very creative, inspiring and satisfying. In the best case, every project is a new adventure.
SV: What’s your dream project?
Thomas von Aagh: My dream project would be a collection of creative, arty pictures or portraits of all kind of interesting people around the world, from politics, music and fashion. Everyone could be a part of the show by buying their prints and giving the money as a donation to their favourite charity. This collection should be as popular as the Pirelli calender.
SV: Where do you live and what inspires you about that area of town?
Thomas von Aagh: I live in Neuhausen in Munich. It’s a very nice part of the city with a lot of small cafés, bars and restaurants. You can also find in between the very green environment and beautiful old houses - a numbers of backyard ateliers, antiques shops and people just sitting on the streets, drinking wine and playing the guitar. It’s always worth grabbing your bike or just walking around the corner.
SV: How long have you lived in your city and brought you there?
Thomas von Aagh: I moved here approximately nine-years-ago. After my early childhood and youth in the south of Munich’s suburbs, I started working and learning as an assistant in a studio in the area Schwabing. That's when I decided to move into the city.
SV: What does your city mean to you?
Thomas von Aagh: Munich for me is always a place I like to return to after traveling. As I have seen and worked in many cities around the world - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Johannesburg or even Paris - it is always a good feeling to know that there is Munich waiting for you. By travelling around the world you learn to appreciate the city’s safety, the cleanliness and the nice people. People living and working here often don´t appreciate that.
