We speak to the co-founder of Fotodoks, Munich's acclaimed documentary photography festival

  • Text by Christine Bierhals

The FotoDoks festival has become the centre for documentary photography in Munich. The exhibition presents social documentary and photo-journalism through to the media's reflection of distant crisis regions and our immediate surroundings. FotoDoks is documenting the everyday madness - the tension between credibility and sensationalism.

Satellite Voices spoke to Hans Herbig, photographer and founder of FotoDoks about the festival, his career and his hometown of Munich.

Satellite Voices: What have you been up to recently?
Hans Herbig: Managing life, family, work and lately with the organisation of FotoDoks.

SV: How do you describe your work?
Hans Herbig: Freelance for life. After being in skate and snowboarding for a long time I’m now shooting a wide variety of subjects. It’s hard to describe. Really, I try to shoot a lot. FotoDoks keeps me busy.

SV: You're the initiator of FotoDoks in Munich. Can you tell us about the exhibition?
Hans Herbig: This year FotoDoks finally becomes a real festival with a main exhibition, partner exhibitions, partner galleries, discussions and workshops. The exhibition takes place at the Münchner Stadtmuseum and can be seen until November 13. It consists of 16 different stories created by eight German and eight Italian photographers. Everyone should see it!

SV: Why did you come up with FotoDoks?
Hans Herbig: A friend of mine was organising a small documentary film festival in Bad Aibling, a small city near to Munich, where we both grew up. He suggested I should do something with photography. That initiated FotoDoks. We were organising it in Bad Aibling for two years and than decided to make the move to Munich which proved to be the right thing to do.

SV: Why Munich?
Hans Herbig: Because we all live and work here and because it is my home! And also because Munich is fairly under-represented in the German photo scene.
