Part 1: Kicking off our new series with the emerging gallery Firstlines with an interview with its founder Florian Hubalek
- Text by Sylvia Weber
Since 2009, Firstlines Gallery in the bohemian Glockenbach quarter of Munich has dedicated itself to the promotion and development of individualistic art and up-and-coming talents from different artistic fields. The exceptional Munich gallery is developing to be a celebrated creative hub and breeding ground for innovative ideas, and strives to enable young artists to artistic evolution.
For this reason Satellite Voices is proud to collaborate with Firstlines on a weekly series where we introduce the gallery and its artists to the Satellite Voices community. To start the series, we sat down with Firstline´s owner and inventor Florian Hubalek and talked to him about the gallery and art in Munich.
SatelliteVoices: What is your job at Firstlines?
Florian Hubalek: I am the owner, director, assistent, curator, arthandler and the gallerina!
SatelliteVoices: How would you describe the gallery´s concept?
Florian Hubalek: Firstlines gallery is about setting up things, drawing the first lines for young artists. Firstlines is interested in creating a dialogue full of excitement together with young artists and omnifarious creative people. Firstlines makes young talents act in self-determining sphere of activity and thus is enabling an artistical (r)evolution.
SatelliteVoices: What is your motivation for your daily work?
Florian Hubalek: Art and my artists.
SatelliteVoices: What do you consider your biggest success so far?
Florian Hubalek: Opening my own gallery space after being homless for one-and-a-half years. Keeping all the artists I worked with in the Firstlines team.
SatelliteVoices: What is your next project?
Florian Hubalek: Frank Balve- Erster Gesang. An amazing multi media room installation through the whole gallery space, based on "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri, that will be exiting!
SatelliteVoices: What is your dream project?
Florian Hubalek: This project is already a kind of a dream, watching it growing, seeing its positive progress - and that's good for now.
SatelliteVoices: What was the first piece of art you bought?
Florian Hubalek: A silkscreenprint from Rafael Gerlach (Satone).
SatelliteVoices: What isnpires you in Munich and the area your gallery is located in?
Florian Hubalek: On one hand you have a silent town on the other hand you have a small but very lively and current art scene. Munich got wonderfull institutions, museums, galleries and not to forget very important and powerful collectors for contemporary art. It is not the center of the art world, but there will be enough of an audience for the Firstlines gallery.
SatelliteVoices: Can you describe the current artistic spirit in Munich from your point of view in one sentence?
Florian Hubalek: I think it is impossible to describe, because there are so many ways of expression and styles.
