The Fly Russian Takeover: OL
May 23
Part 4 of our celebration into the future sound of Russia with the always evolving soulful electronic bump of OL
- Text by Terence Teh
There's a new future beats scene exploding worldwide and it's coming from Russia. Lo-fi and nasty, with sublime electronics and a thumping lust for bass, artists like Pixelord, DZA and OL are leading a new sonic revolution to rival the Low End Theory of those cosmic LA beat bethrens or the UK's post dubstep dons. To celebrate and explore this movement, label Error Broadcast and blog Gimme 5 released the inspired compilation, "Fly Russia".
On Friday we left you with the juggernaut beats of Pixelord and today we get low to the rolling, broken house and future hip hop of OL aka Oleg Buyanov.
Satellite Voices: Can you introduce yourself and your releases so far?
OL: My name is Oleg Buyanov. i was born in 1986 and I have lived here in Moscow since that time. I am fond of making different music that lends to a unique style in producing, beatmaking and sampling.
SV: There seems to be a creative uprising in Russia, how do you feel your scene?
OL: Yes, nowadays the situation in electronic music scene develops and gets its own image and style. I suppose that the reason for this is the opening of borders in all aspects of life. The influence for this development can be seen in everything: mass media, variety of club culture and appearing of local record labels. All this supports the unification and growing of local community to the world level and every local beatmaker or musician can easily get its worldwide audience.
SV: What do you think about the luxury vs. the punk DIY vibe that exists in Moscow?
OL: This segmentation is too simple, we get several place where all this things are mixed in, like luxury society and the punk DIY vibe. People mostly like to mix all this together trying to reach some middle, because of this appears some kind of co-existence of these two vibes.
SV: What other artists inspire you?
OL: Lone, Lapti, SBTRKT, Africa Hitech and DJ Rashad.
SV: What are the best parties in Moscow that represent this music?
OL: For parties we have: at Arma 'Save', at Solyanka 'Dance Box', at 16 Tonns 'Capital Bass' and the RAD home parties.
