The Fly Russian Takeover: Pixelord
May 20
Part 3 of our celebration into the future sound of Russia with the bit-crushing electronic funk of Pixelord
- Text by Terence Teh
There's a new future beats scene exploding worldwide and it's coming from Russia. Lo-fi and nasty, with sublime electronics and a thumping lust for bass, artists like Pixelord, DZA and OL are leading a new sonic revolution to rival the Low End Theory of those cosmic LA beat bethrens or the UK's post dubstep dons. To celebrate and explore this movement, label Error Broadcast and blog Gimme 5 released the inspired compilation, "Fly Russia".
Yesterday we had the graphics ninja behind the artwork Roma stop by and today, ready for the weekend, we introduce one of the most celebrated and breakthrough Russian beat producers, the sublime melodious thunk of Pixelord.
Satellite Voices: Can you introduce yourself and your releases so far?
Pixelord: My name is Alexey, and I released music as Pixelord. There are four released EPs, one of them is 12" vinyl, and one more 12" EP to be releases in may 2011.
SV: There seems to be a creative uprising in Russia, how do you feel your scene?
Pixelord: I usually say I feel its growing, I can see young talents appear but that's really complex in Russia with underground music. I think that scene is still in a bad state, though, we had something really cool about new music in 2000s but then its disappeared and now we have like, the second flow, the second chance to go worldwide, and this time it goes better.
SV: What do you think about the luxury vs. the punk DIY vibe that exists in Moscow? Do you consider this mismatch typical for present-day Russia?
Pixelord: Auch an experimental question! I'm all for DIY stuff, luxury must die... but not forever, let's revive luxury when we will be bored with DIY. I don't like politics.
SV: What other artists inspire you?
Pixelord: There's too much! Africa Hitech, Boxcutter, Hyetal, Machinedrum, Groundislava, Naive Machine and FaltyDL...
SV: What are the best parties in Moscow that represent this music?
Pixelord: I like all the CapitalBass parties, they represent all the current best music from everywhere, and bring a lot of amazing musicmakers here. But I don't visit clubs so much...
SV: What’s next?
Pixelord: I'm going to get my German visa and go to Berlin and play in big clubs and eat German superfood! There will be the release of my new 12" EP with Leisure System Records and some remixes here and there. Actually, I'm preparing for an extra, secret, super animation collaboration.
