Introducing the Russian band blessed by Quentin Tarantino
Simple Symmetry is the ambitious project of two brothers, Sasha (keybords in Pompeya) and Sergey Lipsky, who are already well-known in the Moscow music scene. Between live perfomances in clubs and music festivals and recording new tracks with international labels the band talked to Satellite Voices about its first steps and grandiouse future plans.
Satellite Voices: When and how did you form your band?
Simple Symmetry: We formed Simple Symmetry in January or February 2010. Being brothers we set up a home-based recording studio and began to compose music. Our first result was a remix on the Pompeya song 'Inviters'. The track became rapidly very popular among Moscow DJs. After that we understood we should continue what we have started. Our following remixes have been released on different labels including Xuman Records (Russia), Highscore Publishing (Germany) and Future Classic (Australia).
SV: What's the meaning behind your name?
Simple Symmetry: The story behind our name is much more interesting. Once we ran across the street in the Moscow centre trying to get to a private party on time. We had the same haircuts, round glasses and black frock coats. At the National Hotel entrance, where the party was, we knocked down a famous film director and frequent Moscow guest Quentin Tarantino. However, he didn't start to make a fuss but stood up with all his dignity, shook himself, attentively looked at our faces and said, "Oh this is fucking simple symmetry!" That is how we got such a cool name.
SV: What does making music mean to you?
Simple Symmetry: It's like writing poems for a poet, creating paintings for a painter and demonstrating genitals for an egzibicionist. This is an internal need - a need for self-expression.
SV: Is music everything you ever wanted to do?
Simple Symmetry: At this moment music is everything for us.
SV: What are your plans for the future?
Simple Symmetry: Several of our tracks are going to be released soon. One of those will be made on the label Tigers on a Leash from Brooklyn. We're also planning collaborations with our favourite producers and have already worked with Pharrell. The rest is a secret.
SV: What inspires you?
Simple Symmetry: We are inspired by the music from the 20th - 21st centuries, Russian and foreign musicians and DJs compliments have a therapeutic effect on us and stimulate us to move forward.
