Irina Grigoryeva reveals her highlights of Moscow’s catwalk season
The Fly Russian Takeover: Roma
May 19
Part 2 of our celebration into the future sound of Russia with the stunning visuals of the Moscow artist
- Text by Terence Teh
There's a new future beats scene exploding worldwide and it's coming from Russia. Lo-fi and nasty, with sublime electronics and a thumping lust for bass, artists like Pixelord, DZA and OL are leading a new sonic revolution to rival the Low End Theory of those cosmic LA beat bethrens or the UK's post dubstep dons. To celebrate and explore this movement, label Error Broadcast and blog Gimme 5 released the inspired compilation, "Fly Russia".
Yesterday we had the Error Broadcast label over to talk shop and today it's about the visuals. The humble graphics ninja from Moscow who created the "Fly Russia" art - Roma.
Satellite Voices: Can you introduce yourself and what you do?
Roma: I'm just a regular fellow from the Moscow region. I'm just doing my thing. Hustle everyday. I like any kind of activity. To play basketball or to paint a picture, it doesn't matter if you are a proper artist.
SV: How would describe your style of work?
Roma: I guess my style of work is just 'do something'. It's like training for my imagination. I just love this stuff.
SV: How are you inspired by Moscow?
Roma: Moscow is a really great city for me now. I live in centre near the Red Square. Walking in the old parts of Moscow makes me really inspired. My city is my memory. I like riding my bike on this streets, I like walk with my girl on this streets, I like breaking stuff on these streets with my friends. I just like these streets, if you know what I mean.
SV: How is it working as an artist in Moscow?
Roma: If you want to work in nice agency as artist you just must have enough skills. There are a lot of talented people in Moscow, a lot of cool studios and a lot of work to do. So there is no problem to find a good job if you are good too.
SV: Can you talk about your favourite local artists?
Roma: There are a lot of cool guys and girls with skills. Check out Plkv, Guerilla, 404, Sick Systems, Merdanchik...
