Gulf Film Festival opens in Dubai bringing a new wave of bold and exciting regional cinema to the world

  • Text by Kate Hazell

The fourth Gulf Film Festival kicks off tonight celebrating local and regional talent in the cinema industry. The six-day event, held at Festival City, will screen 153 films from 31 nations including more than 110 from the Gulf nations, Iraq and Yemen films as well as honouring eminent experimental French filmmaker Gérard Courant, who holds the world record for the longest film ever made, the 156-hour Cinématon (starring Youssef Chahine and Jean-Luc Godard).

“The Gulf Film Festival is unique in the world as the only platform where filmmakers from the Gulf nations, Iraq and Yemen can share what’s on their minds and their hearts with the rest of the world in an open setting,” says the Festival Chairman Abdulhamid Juma. “There has never been a more important time for this, and we are looking forward to a wonderful, thought-provoking week.”

The Gulf Film Festival runs from April 14 - April 20
