WHAM! BAM! ISLAM!
February 29, 2012
The Muslim world's first superhero cartoon debuts in the UAE tonight
- Text by Kate Hazell
The film tells the story of Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa and his venture to create the first team of superheroes from the Muslim world called THE 99. Following the tumultuous journey of THE 99 from concept to reality, from acclaim to censure by Islam’s cultural gatekeepers, from the edge of bankruptcy to plans for theme parks and an animation series, Al-Mutawa dodges cultural minefields and tries to tackle the harsh realities of the global marketplace while doggedly pursuing his vision to bring new heroes to Muslim children while re-introducing Islam to the West.
Following the screening, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa will talk more about THE 99 and social entrepreneurship in the Middle East. Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa is the Founder and CEO of Teshkeel Media Group, for whom he created THE 99. Recently Forbes named THE 99 as one of the top 20 trends sweeping the globe and most recently, President Barack Obama praised Dr. Naif and THE 99 as perhaps the most innovative of the thousands of new entrepreneurs viewed by his Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship.
Here Naif talks more about the project.
Wham! Bam! Islam is screened tonight at 7pm at Traffic @
