Fathima Mohiuddin is the hyperactive artist and curator behind a new group show of illustration entitled "Genius", opening this Wednesday at The Cartoon Art Gallery. We talk with Mohiuddin to find out more about the show, as well as her recently launched creative management agency, The Domino.
Satellite Voices: Tell us more about The Domino. How has the local scene reacted to your position as a creative management agency?
Fathima Mohiuddin: I spent a month in the UK last summer, on a grant from the British Council, researching artist-run entities. I think in Dubai there's been a big need for artists taking initiative and creating opportunities for themselves. As an artist I've experienced the need for more platforms and as a curator I'm keen to create them. It is crucial to make things happen, scouting new talents locally and supporting creative living here.
The response to our concept has been a really positive one. Artists react really well and trust us, as the know the business is run by artists. We do understand their needs.
SV: Can you tell us a little bit more about the exhibition program?
Fathima Mohiuddin: So far we have two "Genius" interactions. The first is on the 11th of February and is called "Sketchbook Sessions". It’s an informal gathering of illustrators and illustration enthusiasts, that will entail going through sketchbooks, watching interviews with illustrators, and a live performance. It will also be a platform where we discuss, how we can continue to build and strengthen the community of illustrators in the UAE.
On the 18th of February there will be a second set of discussions on these topics: the role of technology in illustration, careers in illustration and their challenges, the illustrator as an artist and unconventional uses of illustration. Both are at The Cartoon Art Gallery from 2pm and we urge people to register beforehand.
SV: With "Genius" now in its third year, how do you feel the project has grown since the beginning?
Fathima Mohiuddin: The first exhibition featured the work of 17 illustrators. To be honest it took some time to find them. This year we have 28 illustrators and I had to turn away at least 6 submissions that came in late. I've had a lot more interest this year then when it first started out. There's definitely something brewing.
