Annalisa Dunn (London, UK)

Annalisa Dunn wowed the fashion press at the Central Saint Martins MA fashion show in February, with her geometric, monochromatic knits that adorn every part of the body. The 25-year-old designer continues to impress with her remarkable knitwear, and is looking to the future by starting her own label.

How long have you been designing?

Since I completed my foundation course seven years ago, I never had the chance to study fashion or design at school. I did fine art, which loved it but I had a feeling I wanted to do fashion- I knew nothing about it really. So I told my parents I was taking a gap year and did a foundation. And I loved it.

What nationality are you?

British.

Where are you based?

London

Why knitwear?

I love knitwear. It has a funny place in the fashion world, as it's not quite textiles and not quite fashion. I think it's still undervalued by the industry. Personally I love knitwear because it gives me the opportunity to explore texture, pattern and 3D structure all at the same time.

How would you describe your style?

A great big mix of as many contrasting elements as I can use. I love to explore form on the body, designing geometric shapes, which then distort or drape the body. I also love to play with scale, from patterns and stripes to the size of a knitted stitch.

What inspires you at the moment?

Lots: photography, art, architecture and people. I'm definitely inspired by this city.

Were you interested in fashion when you were growing up?

My grandmother was a wonderful dressmaker and knitter. I used to love doing creative projects with her; knitting and messing around with fabrics. She always said I'd be a designer!

With all of the press interest in your collection what are your plans now?

I am launching a label, a'nd, with another designer from St Martins, Dorothee Hagemann in September. It will be a mainly knitted collection, with some fabulous accessories and jewellry.

What is your dream job?

It's always been my dream to have my own label. As long as I'm happy, creative and supporting myself, it's all good.

Who are your favourite designers and why?

I love Vivienne Westwood, for her sense of drama, she has no fear and amazing skills.

Who do you imagine wearing your clothes? Who would be your ideal customer?

I love anyone wearing my clothes. In whatever way they want to, it's great watching people try things on and making them their own.

What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

Hopefully, I'll still be having fun!
