Cachaça, a pure spirit distilled from fresh pressed sugarcane juice, was invented by the first Portugese settlers in Brasil in the sixteenth century. But it wasn't until 1922, when Brasil's modernist avant-garde organised a Modern Art Week in Sao Paolo, that cachaça emerged as a symbol of Brasilian identity, and it soon came to be considered the country's national drink.

It's the third most consumed spirit in the world after vodka and soju, and is the key ingredient in caipirinha, Brasil's famed lime and sugar cocktail.

To make a Sagatiba Classic Caipirinha
Cachaca
  • 50ml Sagatiba Pura
  • 4 wedges of lime
  • 2 spoons of sugar

Pour the sugar over the lime wedges and muddle well. Fill with ice and add Sagatiba. Stir well or shake.

The Brief

Your photos don't have to be of Brasil itself, but they do have to evoke the Pure Spirit of Brasil - not the Brasil of the tourists' trail, but the Brasil of street parties, beach football, midnight swimming, or a glass of caipirinha.
