The first rapper to hold down three Top 20 spots at once on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Eminem, New Jersey trap king Fetty Wap boasts more than 600 million plays on YouTube. A platinum-selling, multi-award-winning artist, the 24-year-old rapper’s eponymous debut instantly secured a devoted fanbase the world over.
His breakout single, “Trap Queen”, sent love out to the women who allowed his success to happen, peppered with references to cooking crack cocaine and pole dancing. Coming up from an area that exposed him to a life without luxury or opportunity helped shaped Fetty’s desire to write music that offered escapism from life’s hardships and represented freedom.
Identifiable by his dark gold dreads, Haitian bandana and prosthetic left eye, which he chose to appear without in the video for “Trap Queen”, Fetty is now one of the most Googled artists in the world, inviting remixes from big hitters such as Drake. Frontman to his self-formed brotherhood Remy Boyz, chanting ‘1738’ as an ode to their favourite blend of cognac, Fetty is the kind of unlikely hero everyone can root for.
