Ren Hang shoots nudes and nature in Athens

The Chinese photographer trips to Europe to capture his friends looking into lakes, obscured by rocks and amongst cacti

Photographer Ren Hang’s affinity with nature and the nude form continues in his latest book Athens Love. Continuing to produce work outside of his native home of China, where he is often censored or in trouble with police who threaten to arrest him, for his latest book Hang trips to Attica and Athens in Greece. While his last book NEW LOVE was shot in New York, here Hang swaps skylines and cityscapes to shoot his friends gazing into glistening lakes, obscured between rocks, swamped by daffodils or amongst cactus and aloe vera plants.

Keeping within the same vein as his previous work, Hang’s diaristic approach to his work plays out like a really wonderfully shot travel diary, which – like NEW LOVE introduced – also sees clothed shots of his friends smoking, travelling in cabs and kissing. However, it’s the book’s nudes – shots in April 2015 – that remain the book’s centrepiece.

Hang will be signing copies of Athens Love at New York’s Dashwood Books on 25 March 2016 with an exhibition will be held at the city’s Klein Sun Gallery from 24 March 2016
