The Danish producer Martinez, aka Martin Swanstein has earnt the reputation as one of the most respected producers in tech-house, fusing his influences from Chicago house and Detroit techno. Having cut his musical background from classical training, he has since released minimal electronic to more full-on house tracks on labels like the legendary Cadenza, and Steve Bug's Dessous. In preparation of his gig at London's Fabric on September 4th, Martinez gives us a special mix of tracks from his repertoire.
Dazed Digital: Your music tends to be quite dark sounding, is this intentional?
Martinez: I guess it’s not necessarily meant to be dark. I just I prefer more minor chords… darker music just feels better to me. It’s not like depressing, just deeper so it feels more natural to me.
DD: Where do you think your music is going?
Martinez: I think I’ll remain more techy – more house, techno, Chicago, Detroit stuff. But you never know what might inspire you!
DD: So far, which release of yours has been your favourite & why?
Martinez: I’ve been really happy with my three albums as a collection of what I’ve been doing. They're representative of the sound I was making at that point, so it’s more organic. I would say my remix for Underworld was fun doing too.
DD: What are you up to these days?
Martinez: I guess travelling a lot, I just went to Ibiza for a week, a lot of beach and parties, it’s nice just to chill out with some friends who live there. And I love to cook, so I love to spend my time doing that at home! I'm pretty excited about just having time to sit down and make music and work on a more dubby laidback project and some more tracks, and I also have a 12″ on Cadenza Records.
Martinez will be playing Fabric on September 4th alongside Craig Richards, Dopplereffekt and Tim Green.
