Andrew Field-Pickering and Ari Goldman scoured the flea markets and record stores in their hometown Maryland for disco, gogo and boogie records and listened hard to all of them, picking out the best and the worst bits to re-arrange for their Beautiful Swimmers debut released earlier this year on Future Times.

Q&A

What's...
… your description of your sound?
Hmmmm, the range of influences is broad, from synth boogie to go-go, to house, to new beat and cosmic shit. Maybe "Strictly for the freaks".

… so special about you, then?
There's a lot of edits of already cool songs, and we just try to go harder with the samples. There are a lot of songs out there that are not getting the care they deserve. There are a lot of wack re-arrangements of classic disco songs and all that. That's cool, but not our vibe.

… the story behind your name?
Slang for blue crabs, a local favorite food. There's also a book called Beautiful Swimmers that you always see around here.

… your worst vice?
Some would say chron, but that is actually a beautiful thing, so soda.

… your dream musical collaboration?
Jimi Hendrix and Ron Hardy.

… on your stereo?
EPMD - Strictly Business LP

… the best piece of advice you've heard?
Listen for the snare. Mixing was easy after that.

… your secret?
If you wake up really early, you find these records that look crazy. And you buy them, and sometimes they suck or aren't really great except for one part. We both always have a bunch of these records that we're holding onto because they have one great part, or a cool scream. Or whatever. So we just sample the cool parts. And we rearrange them into songs we want to DJ.

… the one thing you’d kill for?
Nothin'

… your vision of the future?
Things will be better in future times.
