Cher has released the first single from her ABBA cover album

The icon plus vocoder, plus ABBA, equals club anthem

It’s the summer of Cher. Having put in a stellar performance in Mamma Mia 2, she’s just dropped her debut single from her forthcoming album Dancing Queen in tribute to ABBA.

“Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” is an uptempo club tune that you’re sure to hear in Soho in the near future. It has the same shaky vocoder vocals as her 1998 classic “Believe”. That’s probably because both tunes were produced by her long time collaborator, Mark Taylor.

The rest of the ABBA cover album will be released on September 28. For a review of Cher and only Cher in Mamma Mia reread Shon Faye’s comprehensive review here, in which she affirms that “like God, or time, Cher is a concept so ineffable and expansive she cannot be fully encapsulated by the imperfect semiotics of human language.”
